If you thought that margins in notebooks were created to mark day/date or bullets and numbers , then you have mistaken this fact. Originally, margins were not made to leave space for outraged teachers' notes.

The actual fact behind the margins is that, in the past, books were often victims of mice and rats who liked to gnaw on paper. In order not to let rodents eat parts of information along with the paper, people started to leave empty spaces at the edges, where the damage was most likely to occur.

Later on, the notebook manufactures added columns to mark day/date above the margin, in order to make proper date wise notes or to maintain your personal diary. Margins also help teachers to make comments or marking grades and marks regarding whatever you have written on that paper.
