Why keyboard is not arranged alphabetically..?

Ever thought , 'Why keyboard keys are not arranged in the alphabetical order ?'

To know about the above keyboard fact, we first need to understand the keyboards which were earlier used in the typewriters . Typewriter was first introduced in 1829 by William Austin Bert . However the breakthrough came in 1867, when his friend Christopher Lattham Sholes of Milwaukee with the assistance of his friends Carlos Glidden and Samuel W. Soule invented their first typewriter.

In the olden days, the typewriters did have alphabetically arranged keys. But ,technology was not this much advanced and the typewriters used to have a mechanical keyboard instead of an electronic keyboard. When the typewrites became popular among the typists, they turned out to be way faster than the machines and this resulted in the mechanical character arms getting jumbled up all together.

Therefore, to solve this issue , the makers of typewriters decided to design a keyboard with rearranged keys, which will slow down the typing speed of users. So, they placed keys like A, S, W which are used maximum number of times , on the left side of the keyboard which made it difficult for the users to type these keys. This arrangement of keys is known as QWERTY layout, which was developed by Christopher Sholes in 1868.

The QWERTY layout became so much popular that we are still using this layout. There is another layout which came after QWERTY, known as DVORAK. The Dvorak Simplified Keyboard layout was patented in 1936 by August Dvorak and his brother-in-law, William Dealey.

Whereas QWERTY was designed to stop the jamming of typewrites, but DVORAK was developed to come up with a faster and more efficient layout, by placing the most commonly used keys next to the strongest fingers.
